Malaysia prime minister asks people to stay at home to prevent the spread of the coronavirus.

Malaysia authorities ordered the closure of schools and businesses for two weeks, after the prime minister announced a two-week lockdown. Malaysians are not allowed to travel overseas. Foreigners are also banned from entering the country.

Reports show that not everyone is taking the lockdown seriously even if most parts of the capital Kuala Lumpur remain quiet. Some reportedly traveled out of the capital and went to their hometowns instead of staying home, which was recommended by authorities.

There were customers at eateries instead of going there for takeouts. People were also going for walks in parks that were officially closed.

The aim of the restrictions "is not to return to your hometowns, to go... shopping in the supermarket, for walks in the park or on holiday", said Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin.

"No -- the purpose is that you stay at home. Stay at home and protect your family."

"In these two weeks, sit quietly at home... Watch television, HBO or whatever. No problem," he added.

Malaysia has a record of 790 confirmed virus cases and two deaths, the highest number in Southeast Asia. More than half of the infections are linked to an Islamic gathering a few weeks ago.

The two-week lockdown prohibits mass gatherings. Only important services such as supermarkets, gas stations, banks, and pharmacies must remain open.

In a televised message, Muhyiddin explained that the new measures, under the Restriction of Movement Order, can help curb the situation from worsening. He urged the people to stay calm and assure them that there is enough supply of food and health care services and masks.

“We cannot wait until the situation deteriorates. Drastic moves are needed immediately to restrict public movement and curb the spread of the virus,” he said.
