Arkansas-based Simmons Prepared Foods, Inc. over 2 million pounds of chicken products have been recalled in eight US states due to possible foreign matter contamination.

According to  the US Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS), Simmons Prepared Foods, Inc. recalled the chicken products produced from October 21 through November 4 this year over fears of contamination with foreign matter such as metal.

The recalled poultry products amounting to 2,071,397 pounds include ready to cook chicken whole legs, boneless skinless chicken, halal chicken leg quarters and chicken tenderloins.

These items have an establishment number "P-1949," "P- 486" or "P-5837" inside the USDA mark of inspection and were transported to Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Georgia, Minnesota, Oklahoma and Pennsylvania.

Simmons Prepared Foods establishments discovered the problem during further processing.

In a statement, the company said: "Food safety is a very serious matter at Simmons. That is why Simmons has issued a precautionary and voluntary recall of approximately 2 million pounds of fresh and frozen chicken products ... We are working closely with regulatory authorities and affected customers to expedite this product recall."

The recall was classified by the FSIS as Class I, which means that there is a "reasonable probability that the use of the product will cause serious, adverse health consequences or death."

While there have been no confirmed reports of adverse reactions due to consumption of these products, people concerned about an injury or illness are advised contact a healthcare provider.

FSIS expressed concern that some products are frozen and in institutional freezers. It is calling on establishments that have purchased the products not to serve them but either throw them away or return to the place of purchase.

In July 2016, Simmons Prepared Foods also recalled chicken products due to possible E-Coli O121 contamination. The products involved were its frozen, heat treated, not ready-to-eat (NRTE) chicken tenderloin items produced on Januart 25, 2016.
