Resident Evil 2 has been selected as the ultimate game of the year at the 2019 Golden Joystick Awards, held in London England.

Resident Evil 2, the remake of the 1998 game that takes place in the middle of a zombie apocalypse, received praised from critics and players and bagged the ultimate game of the year award at the Golden Joystick Awards. The game also won the best audio category.

The award winners are mainly voted for by the public and at the award ceremony's 37th year, over 3.5 million votes were cast in for 19 of the 24 categories.

At the event, the Lifetime Achievement was awarded to video game developer Yu Suzuki, who spent decades at Sega but has more recently developed mobile games. In an interview with Radio 1 Newsbeat, Suzuki said: "Because my career started with the arcade game, the word joystick has a retro sound to it. So it's really such an honor."

"Nowadays, there are just so many different types of games in terms of diversity - there are smartphone games, consoles and the variety of games as well as the number of platforms. It is a very healthy environment," he added.

2018 ultimate game winner Fortnite won the best e-sports title while its maker Epic Games was named as studio of the year. The 13-year-old Fortnite player Ewok, who is deaf and recently became the first female player of e-sports team Faze Clan, was named the best streamer for the year.

Electronic Arts' battle royale game Apex Legends won as the best multiplayer game while Cyberpunk 2077, which comes out in April, was named the most wanted game at the event. Cyberpunk 2077 surged in popularity at the E3 conference earlier this year after it was announced Keanu Reeves will star as protagonist Johnny Silverhand.

BTS World won the mobile game of the year was BTS World, where users play as the manager of the K-pop boy band.
