Disney has announced that the release of its upcoming film Mulan, will be delayed due to the ongoing coronavirus outbreak.

Disney said that the release of Mulan, the live-action remake of the 1998 animated film of the same title, will be moved out of an abundance of caution against the coronavirus outbreak.

The film, which was about a Chinese female warrior, was scheduled to open on March 27 in North America.

The company also announced that its other films, The New Mutants and Antlers, will also be delayed. They were set to hit the North American big screen on April 3 and April 17, respectively.

Disney said that it is considering new potential release dates for all three movies.

The film Mulan had a production cost of $200 million and is forecast to be a big hit globally, particularly in China.

It tells the story of Mulan, a legendary fighter from ancient China who poses as a man to take her elderly father's place in the army and protect her country from invaders. The main protagonist was played by Yifei Liu.

Previously, Disney closed down its theme parks in Tokyo, Japan as the coronavirus outbreak in the country continued to spread.

The decision to shut down the theme parks follows a request by the Japanese government to cancel or postpone large gatherings and events over the next few weeks to prevent the spread of coronavirus.

Other films also delayed

Several movies from other companies have also been delayed due to the virus. MGM's upcoming James Bond movie No Time To Die, which stars Daniel Craig, was set to open on April 10 but was moved to November.

Universal Studios decided to delay F9, the ninth installment of its Fast and the Furious film franchise, from the scheduled May 22 debut to an April 2, 2021 release.

Due to the pandemic, Paramount Pictures also announced on Thursday that the horror film A Quiet Place II will be postponed.
